H&D College Internship Program

Horace & Dickies Seafood of Glenarden is committed to serving their community and would love to have high school and college students who are looking to gain professional experience join their family. We currently have two tracks in our internship program, social media and management training.

Social Media Intern

If you have an interest in marketing, communications, social media or graphic design this would be a great opportunity for you to learn more! The Social Media Intern will be responsible for assisting with the coordination and execution of the company’s social media strategy, working across key social media channels including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. This role offers the intern a total immersion into a busy, digital campaign for a growing start up and small business. The candidate will work closely with key members of staff including the communications and marketing manager, as well as crew members, customers and members of the local community to learn more about social media, digital communications, marketing and community relation in a business environment. This role will be instrumental in increasing our social media presence and gaining visibility for our brand among clients and other potential community and business partners. 

This is an unpaid, part-time position and requires between 10-20 hours per week. The H & D family will work with the student and university/school to ensure that class credit is given for the internship, if applicable. The duration of the social media internship follows the school semester schedule: spring, summer and fall. 

Social Media Intern Job Responsibilities:

  • Assists with the management of the company’s social media accounts and content posts

  • Brainstorms campaign ideas

  • Monitor various social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

  • Analyzes analytics to gauge the success of campaigns.

  • Understands the overall concept of the company, including the brand, customer, product goals, and all other aspects of service.

  • Engages with customers or clients and provides service and/or sales.

  • Provides suggestions to management for improving customer experience on social platforms and internal processes.

  • Learns and becomes proficient on internal software systems.

  • Assists in creating performance reports.

Social Media Intern Job Requirements:

  • Proven written communication skills, and a passion for writing both short- and long-copy.  Excellent verbal communications skills.  

  • An interest in marketing, communications, social media or reputation management

  • Familiarity with key social media tools (e.g. Twitter and Facebook) and with Microsoft Office products (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel)

  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud or Canva is a plus

  • An ability to consistently demonstrate our values of insight, hard work, and effectiveness in your personal approach to work  

  • An entrepreneurial attitude

  • Excellent attention to detail and a high motivation to learn  

  • A proactive, service-focussed attitude towards clients and candidates and the teams you support internally  

  • An ability to remain calm under pressure and a robust/resilient attitude towards challenges

  • An ability to prioritize work and complete tasks with quick turnaround times and minimal fuss  

  • The ability to work collaboratively with a team

Management Trainee Intern

This trainee program is for the entrepreneurial spirited, self-driven, innovative, business budding professional. The Management Trainee's responsibilities include completing all assigned tasks, which may include, performing duties in different departments, gaining knowledge of operations, learning how to handle disputes, attending meetings and workshops, traveling to other locations, providing support and suggestions for improvement, updating records, and preparing documentation. You should also be able to complete any required evaluations. 

 

To be successful as a Management Trainee, you should have superb attention to detail and be able to promptly identify problems. Outstanding candidates will have great leadership, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.

This is an unpaid, part-time position and requires between 10-20 hours per week. The H & D family will work with the student and university/school to ensure that class credit is given for the internship, if applicable. The duration of the management trainee program has two rotations: September - May and June - August.

 

Management Trainee Responsibilities:

  • Completing all assigned tasks and assisting with day-to-day operations.

  • Participating in meetings, workshops, and other learning opportunities.

  • Observing and learning from experienced staff members.

  • Gaining knowledge of company policies, protocols, and processes.

  • Taking detailed notes and liaising with Managers, Supervisors, and other senior staff.

  • Fulfilling any requirements and meeting goals set out at the start of the traineeship.

  • Following all company regulations, and health and safety codes.

  • Preparing documents and updating records.

  • Learning about conflict resolution and sitting in on disciplinary hearings.

  • Traveling to different offices and participating in daily operations as required.

Management Trainee Requirements:

  • Experience in a professional setting

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.

  • A valid driver's license may be required.

  • Proficiency in MS Office.

  • Superb attention to detail.

  • Strong leadership skills.

  • A positive attitude and willingness to learn.

  • Willingness to work overtime if required.

  • Excellent time management skills.
